We specialise in Western Canada because it is an area that we know and love and because we simply don’t believe there is anywhere better to snowboard. After lots of holidays in Europe, we stumbled upon Fernie in 2001 and spent the whole season wishing we had discovered it earlier! You are in for a treat if you have never snowboarded in Western Canada before. However this should come with a health warning because after experiencing Western Canada, riding in Europe will never be the same again! As you may have picked up on we do not run any courses in Eastern Canada as the mountains in the east are much much smaller and the temperature is significantly colder making the conditions much harder. Many of Western Canada’s instructors learnt to snowboard near their home towns in the East but as soon as they could fled in search of the soft, champagne powder that the Rockies are famous for!
1) SNOW QUANTITY AND QUALITY
During the 2007/08 season Fernie received 1118 cm of snow compared to Meribel that had just 396cm. Each winter Western Canada gets dumped on hard and fast but quantity isn’t everything, the quality of the white stuff is also important. We could get very technical and bore you with our scientific knowledge of snow flake formations but all that really matters is that the snow that falls in the Rockies is light, soft and fluffy – commonly referred to as Champagne powder.
2) EMPTY PISTES
Imagine not having to queue for a lift, fight for a table at lunch or miss out on half a days snowboarding while waiting in line to buy a lift pass. It has to been seen to be believed but in some of the less touristy resorts you can literally have the whole piste to yourself. As there are fewer people on the mountain it also means often you can ski fresh tracks all day long especially if you are with an instructor who can show you all the well kept secrets.
3) MORE CHALLENGING AND VARIED TERRAIN
We often describe our resorts as ‘on piste, off piste’ resorts. This is because unlike many European resorts, in Canada they don’t groom nearly as much of the mountain so the terrain is much more natural and has loads of drops, kickers and hits many of which are constantly being shaped and improved by local riders. In Canada you can also ride the whole mountain; no area is off limits, so rather than being channelled down narrow, icy, crowded runs you can pick you line down any part of the mountain whether it be down a gulley or through the trees. Western Canada also have some awesome terrain parks and the resorts work really hard to keep them in good shape throughout the season.
4) BE ADVENTUROUS!
If you are from Europe you can go to the Alps for a week’s holiday every year for the rest of your life! If you are considering spending an extended period of time in the mountains then why not go on an adventure and head a little further away from home.
5) SUPER FRIENDLY PEOPLE
Not only do our clients fall in love with the snow and the empty pistes but it is also the people that really have an effect on them. The Canadians have such a great outlook on life, their energy is contagious and their ‘live every day to the full’ attitude is incredibly invigorating. But best of all they want to get to know you; you will never sit on a chair lift in silence in Canada!
6) NO LANGUAGE BARRIER
This is particularly useful if you are thinking of instructing in Canada!
7) THE MOST 'USER FRIENDLY' QUALIFICATIONS
Another reason that we are based in Canada is because the Canadian instructor qualifications are the most ‘user friendly’. CASI level 1 is the equivalent of the BASI Trainee instructor qualification but unlike BASI, the first level of qualification within the Canadian system actually allows you to instruct. You can then go on to take level 2 which will open up many more doors around the world.
